We are a class from British Columbia, Canada. We are a class of 19 very curious and excited students that enjoy a wide range of activities (although gym always seems to come out on top!). We are interested in technology and how we can use it in the classroom to connect with our families and other people around the world.

I am very excited! This week we are starting our very first spelling list! (Yes, I know you’re excited too!!)

If you have not been in my room before, we use a website (Spellingcity.com) where students can practice their spelling words. It is a really cool site for students to practice and have fun with their spelling words. I also have another great thing with the website! If students complete the practice test, receive 100% and print out the certificate, I will give them a bonus mark for their test on Friday! For the spelling test at the end of the week, I do not require markings or syllable spaces. I have embedded the spelling list below and the link to the Spelling City. There are two lists this year. Students know which one to use to practice.

And Now For Something Completely Different!

And Now For Something Completely Different!

It’s been awhile since we have had something fun on the blog and I found something really funny to share with you but first . . .

One of my fantastic students did something that I thought was really cool and I wanted to share it with you. As you may or may not know, at the end of every day, I play Rock, Paper, Scissors with my students. Unbeknown to me, Spencer, one of my totally cool and awesome students, has been graphing the results of our competitions! He brought it in to show me and I think it is one of the coolest things I have seen. How cool to see Math applied to real life things.  He even sorted by what was used each time by each of us. It was just perfect and I wanted to share his graph with you. I took the photo awhile ago but here it is. I’m probably winning by a lot now since the photo was taken . . .:) I think it is really amazing!

DSCI0099-1

I am in need of 12 glass jars for Science. If anyone would be willing to lend us some glass jars for about a week, that would be great. You will get them back at the end of the lesson (unbroken, of course!).

I found this video yesterday and I thought it was one of the funniest videos that I have seen in awhile. So here it is. Enjoy and we’ll see you tomorrow!

No Skating Tomorrow but Social is Fun Too!

No Skating Tomorrow but Social is Fun Too!

Well, unfortunately, I guess skating is canceled for tomorrow. Our main form of transportation has broken down and we have no other form of transportation. We are trying to reschedule and will let you know if and when that will happen. Therefore, students will need to wear their uniforms tomorrow.

We have started learning about the continents and oceans in Social Studies.  I (Mrs. Goosen) showed the students a youtube clip this afternoon and they asked me to post it…so here it is!  Enjoy!

Who Wants More Skating?

Who Wants More Skating?

thanksgivingDidn’t Thanksgiving seem to go by in a blur? Here and gone again for another year. But it’s not really gone is it? If you are anything like me, who ate way too much, those memories are still hanging around. But also, the idea behind Thanksgiving is one that should always be with us.

This year I am thankful for:

My beautiful family

The health of my two wonderful children

The blessings of a wonderful country to live

A living God who constantly challenges me

The students in my class who really have settled in and are working so hard.

All the visitors to our blog!

Enough of the mushy stuff! Just a reminder that tomorrow students will be going skating again. They will be allowed to wear play clothes again.

It has been a busy week with lots of things happening. For Language Arts, we are slowly working our way through the novel, “Safe As Houses”. It is a challenging book but the students are rising to the challenge and are quite excited to see how true events and stories can be turned into an exciting fiction story. Our unit on Ideas is our focus for writing. Students have been working on ways to generate ideas focusing on generating a main idea and building support for it by thinking of a table. The top of the table is the main idea while the legs provide the support.

In Math, we have started looking at division as the opposite of multiplication where you are looking for the missing factor. We started by looking at a math sentence like 2x=8. Solving for the missing number is basically division. You can look at that as saying 8 divided by 2 or how many twos do you need to make 8. Students have caught on  pretty quickly which is nice to see. When you look at it as the opposite of multiplication, it is really not that hard. What will be hard is when we get to the multiple digit division but we will cross that bridge when we get to it! Please continue to practice the multiplication times tables with your children. The better they know the times tables, the easier everything else will be for them.

Speaking of which, there is going to be a 7x tables quiz on Friday! If you need practice pages, you can use the Math Cafe link on the left side of the page. At the Math Cafe, you can create and print off worksheets for the students to practice with for free!

Now that we have eased into the school year, the next couple of weeks are going to be a busy time as new programs come into place. We will be starting spelling lists next week as well as our Home Reading program! Be on the lookout for more information!

Wow! That’s Important!

Wow! That’s Important!

ice_skatesJust a couple of things to end off the week for you to know about.

Tomorrow is our first skating day. Students are allowed to wear playclothes to school. Please remember to make sure that students have all their stuff ready to go. They should have a helmet and skates (if they are not renting), gloves and warmish clothing.

Monday is also a special day as Highroad would like to cheer for and encourage our fabulous soccer and volleyball teams. Students are allowed to wear jeans and/or casual pants and a mostly black or mostly red (or combination of the two) top. Help us cheer for our teams! Go Highroad!!!

The Water Cycle Makes It . . . Rain . . . Rain!

The Water Cycle Makes It . . . Rain . . . Rain!

water-drop-aWe have had some fun this week in Science. Students have been learning about the Water Cycle and how the water goes from liquids to gas back to liquids again in a cycle of evaporation and condensation. To show this, we did a great experiment yesterday where Mr. Hancock brought his OVEN MITTS OF SCIENCE to school. You can try this experiment at home as well. All you need is a kettle, a tin plate, water and ice cubes.

  1. Put 250 mls of water in the kettle and start it boiling. This will change the water to steam or water vapour. Water vapour is a gas. You can pretend that this is the water found on Earth being heated by the sun and evaporating into our air.
  2. Put the ice cubes into the tray and hold it over the steam. The ice cubes cool the gas or water vapour and collects it on the bottom of the ray. This is called condensation. This is just like the water vapour in our air being cooled as it travels up into the atmosphere. As it cools, it collects into clouds and turns back into water in the process called condensation.
  3. Watch the tin plate or cloud changing more and more water vapour back into water. As more and more collects, it starts to get too heavy and it starts to rain or precipitate.

It was a very cool experiment. Today, we reviewed our material by playing Science Jeopardy and starting our project on making Water Cycle posters describing the whole process. We also watched some fun videos about the water cycle which I am putting down below for your enjoyment.

If you would like to download the Water Cycle song, click here!

On Friday, students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run. We will be running or walking around the field starting at about 9:30. We are asking students to bring in a Loonie or Toonie to raise awareness of this terrible disease.

How’s the Weather In Glocca Morra?

How’s the Weather In Glocca Morra?

climate-changeIn science we have been learning about weather and climate. One would think that would be easy when you see it right outside your window. However, there are many things to learn about how the weather works. Today, students were learning about the difference between weather and climate. Weather is all about what is happening in the atmosphere or sky all the time. Climate doesn’t change from hour to hour. Put simply, climate is the average weather in an area of the world. Students also learned that there are climate controls or things that make climates different in different places in the world. One of those is how close you are to the equator. Another is how close you are to a large body of water. Here is a nice video that shows the differences:

Bill Nye has great videos and here is a great one talking about climate and weather:

Finally, students earned their party for hard work and good behaviour. Students will be having a party on Thursday. If you would like to contribute anything, that would be appreciated. However, students are not obligated to bring anything.

Also, our class is looking for any spare wireless computer mice. If you have extras kicking around the class or would like to donate one, we would like to use them for interacting with the smartboard during Math time.

Thanks!climate2

Class Photos Today!

Class Photos Today!

Class Photo 1976-77In case you didn’t see the poster in the hall or read it in the newsletter, today is Class Photo Day. Students are reminded that they need to be wearing full dress uniforms for class photos. We’ll see you tomorrow!

It’s Fish for Supper! Must Be Friday!

It’s Fish for Supper! Must Be Friday!

It’s been an extremely busy week in in 4H/G. Students have been working very hard and still there is just not enough time in the day for everything. We have started our first Novel Study with the book Safe as Houses. It is written by Eric Walters and tells the true story off the tragic events of 1954, when Hurricane Hazel swept through Ontario. As part of our initial discussions, students have been working on viewing the cover and reading the first few pages of the book to help them make predictions. We have also talked a great deal about what makes a good prediction. A good prediction must be deep, clear and plausible. As we finish up Chapter 1, we will begin discussing Literature Circles and the various roles students will have in order to investigate and understand the content and structure of the book. Each chapter, we will focus on a different role: Discussion Director, Illustrator, Responder/Summarizer, Dictionary Dude and Passage Picker.

As part of our look at Chapter 1, I wanted to give students a sense of what life was like back then and what a hurricane was like. To do that I created a Glogster; a “web poster” where I could put media and text related to the book. You can see the Glogster that I created below. If you right click on it, you should see the option to go full screen to see all of it. To go back to normal, just right click again.

Reminder

Reminder

Friendly Reminder 1Good Afternoon!

Just a reminder of the half day of school tomorrow due to the funeral. Remember, you can always check the calendar (which is found at the top of the page) if you are wondering about dates!

Also, Mrs. Goosen would like to remind students that they need 3 or 4 pictures about themselves for a project they are doing in Social Studies.
