Class Party, Spelling and Memory Verse Tomorrow

Class Party, Spelling and Memory Verse Tomorrow

Well, students have finally earned the first 25 stars. And to celebrate, we will be having a class party tomorrow afternoon. I have asked the students to bring snacks (chips, cookies, fruit, other snack items). If you could send those items to class tomorrow, that would be much appreciated.

We will also be doing our spelling test and memory verse in the morning.

Cheers

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! My son and I traveled to the Lego Convention in Seattle and got to enjoy viewing the amazing creations found there! If you have a passion for lego, you should check out the convention as it is just amazing.

I luv to spell. Don’t yu?

Speaking of spelling, we started our spelling lists today. Students received their first list of 20 words to write in their spelling books. We broke the words down into syllables and phonograms and added the spelling rules for each of the words. As part of our spelling program students will usually get their spelling words on Monday and have a spelling test of those words on Friday. To help students prepare for their spelling tests, I will always put the words on the blog on Monday along with a link to Spelling City. Spelling City is a great site where students can practice their spelling words and do a pre-test to see how well they know the words.

I would encourage students to try the pre-test as it is always good practice and they can earn bonus marks for the actual spelling test. Here is how the bonus mark works. Your child practices the spelling words on the Spelling City site. When they are ready, they do the Spelling City test for those words. If they get all of them correct, students can print out the certificate and bring it to me. I will save it and give them the bonus mark on their spelling test. Alternatively, instead of printing the certificate out and wasting printer ink, you can just write in their planners that they got 100% on the Spelling City test and sign it. I will add it to their spelling test.

Click on the Spelling City box to practice your spelling words and get your bonus point!

This week, our memory verse comes from Matthew 6:9:

“This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

The memory verse for this week is:

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. ~ Philippians 4:4

Hilary Hahn is being featured as our music of the week. She is an amazing violinist who rose to fame very early in her life and is a featured performer at concerts around the world. She is one of my favorite artists and my wife and I had the privilege of seeing her live a couple of years ago with the Vancouver Symphony.  She is also featured as the violinist on one of my favorite soundtracks for the movie, The Village. Absolutely beautiful music that always makes me think of fall.  I have put a couple of clips of her performing here as well as clips of the music from the movie. Enjoy!

Well! The time has finally come! We are starting our first spelling list this week. However, as you may well know by now, I never do things the usual way!

Each week on the Monday, you will find the spelling tests on the blog. You can practice them from there or you can download them and print them out. You will also notice a link to a site called, “Spelling City”. Each spelling list has been entered into the Spelling City site. From there, students can practice their words, play games with the words, download handwriting pages with the spelling words and test themselves to see whether they know all their words.

Special Bonus!!!!!!

I have also told the students that, if they complete the Spelling City test and show me that they have received 100% on it, they can earn a bonus mark on the spelling test they do on Friday. To get the extra mark, they can print out the certificate or report and bring it to me or they can get their parent to write in their planner that they got 100%. Because, the site is American, any Canadian spelling will be marked as incorrect. However, I will not count it as incorrect and would prefer that they continue to spell it the Canadian way. I will just count it as being correct.

So. Here we go!

First Day Under Our Belt!

First Day Under Our Belt!

Well, our first day is under our belt! It was a great start. The students (and the teacher!) were all very excited! It was great to see all the students and hear their excited chatter as they re-established old friendships and got settled into their new class.

We had a busy day today with lots of activities to start getting to know each other. One of the things we did today was to create a mission statement of how our class is going to run this year. Rather than a set of rules that feel prescriptive and restrictive, this mission statement instead will describe what we want to see happen this year, how we will accomplish this and why we want this to happen. We are still finalizing the statement to make it clearer and easier to read. When we are done, I will post it on the blog for everyone to see. I will also be doing a good copy of the statement and having the students all sign it.

I also gave each student a newsletter to take home today which you should have received. At the back of the newsletter is some homework for the parents. The students were all very happy that their parents were getting homework and not them! 🙂 If you could please fill in the questionnaire and send it back with your child, that would be very helpful for me in getting to know your child better. I have also put a copy of the newsletter below.

Other Items:

Phys. Ed and Music: Phys.Ed will be on Tuesday’s and Friday’s this year. Students should have a PE Kit to change into for those days.

Calendar: I have set up a calendar on the blog for important dates and reminders. I try to keep this updated as much as possible and enter in dates as I get them. You should see a link at the top of the page to view the calendar.

Spelling: During the month of September we concentrate on reviewing the phonograms and working on handwriting. Therefore we will not be starting spelling until the end of September. I will be putting out more information about Spelling as we get closer.

I think that is about it for now. Please remember that this  blog is a very important tool in communicating what is happening. There are also lots of resources for both you and your children as well as lots of fun things that I find occasionally. So please check out the blog as much as possible or sign up to be notified when a new article is posted!
