Spelling and Memory Verse Are Only A Few Things Happening This Week

Spelling and Memory Verse Are Only A Few Things Happening This Week

My apologies! Not having had spelling for the last couple of weeks, I had forgotten to add the spelling list and memory verse to the site for this week.

Here are the spelling words for this week. Read all the way to the bottom as there are some other announcements.

Spelling N7

Here is the link to the words on Spelling City.

Our memory verse is from Proverbs 6:6:

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!

We have had an extremely busy week and it does not look like it is going to let up! Students have been doing really well with their focus and we have gotten a lot done! In math, we have gotten over the first hurdle with multiplying big numbers. We are now reviewing rounding and estimating. However, we will soon be getting back to multiplying big numbers. Any practice you can do with multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers would be helpful.

In science, we have been having a lot of fun studying space. We have really been getting into depth with space and have been learning all about constellations and our place in the solar system. In the last few classes, we have learned about why the Sun appears to be the same size as the Moon though the Sun is so far away. We also learned how that relates to the stars as they all appear to be so close together so they are actually many light years apart. On Thursday, we are starting something very exciting. We have joined up with a group of scientists and astronauts to grow a set of 60 tomato seeds. Half of the seeds (we don’t know which) were taken into space and exposed to space conditions. The experiment is to determine whether or not the seeds that have been in space will grow differently than regular seeds. This is a real experiment and we will be sending in our results once we have completed the experiment.

Here are some other things happening:

Tomorrow (Weds), we will be participating in Earth Day. As a class, we will be walking through the neighbourhood, picking up garbage as a way to help keep Chilliwack clean. If you would like to join us, we will be going on our walk after lunch at 1:30 for about 1hr and 30 mins.

Thurs is class photo day. Students should wear their full dress uniform.

Sunday is Highroad Sunday. My family will be at Highroad for the Sunday service. Stop by and say hi and see how much Siena has grown!!

Finally, Weds is our class field trip to Science World. The permission forms went home today. Please make sure they come back signed. If you are interested in joining us, please let me know!

Wow, that was a lot of info! I guess that is what happens when you don’t write for awhile!

Spelling for the Week, Memory Verse and Math Problems!

Spelling for the Week, Memory Verse and Math Problems!

A little late on these but here they are.

The Spelling List!

Spelling N 6

Here is the link to the Spelling City for this week. Remember, if you bring in your certificate with 100% on it, you can get an extra mark on your spelling this week!!!

We have been working on our Math Problems of the Day and today we have three to display!!! M.M, D.W and N.G all did a Math Problem using the Artpad.art.com website. Here are their results and how they worked out the problem.

D.W came up with the solution this problem: A telephone company charges 50 cents for the first 3 minutes of a phone call and 10 cents for every minute after. A 4 minute phone call will cost 60 cents. How much will a 15 minute call cost?

N.G. came up with the solution to this problem:

A soccer game is 75 minutes long. If the game starts at 11:25, at what time does it finish?

Our memory verse for this week comes from Psalm 37:1-2:

Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.

Have a great week!

What A Week!

What A Week!

First of all, I think I am about to give up on there actually being a spring. However, it was a great start to the week. The students worked super hard today and we got a lot accomplished. There was a lot of learning happening today, especially in Science. But let’s start at the beginning of the day, shall we?

In Language Arts today, we continue on with our look at our next dress-up, adjectives. Using a number of websites to help explain the concept, the student now have a very good understanding of the concept. One of the things we did today was to do a couple of Pic-Lits. Pic-Lits allow you to add words to a picture describing it. Here are the two that we did today. Click on the picture to see a larger version of it.

Students also got their new spelling words today. You can get them by downloading the spelling words from below or from the box.net widget on the side.

Spelling N 5

Here is the link to the Spelling City list. Remember!! Bring in your report or your certificate and you too can get a free mark on your next spelling test!!!

Students also worked on a new problem of the day in Math today. Then they completed their Chapters 11-20 test. You can see the results from one of the students Problem of Day answers using artpad.com. Some really good thinking going on here!!!

In Science today, we learned about using modals to help us understand ideas and problems that are too large or far away for us to understand. For example, today we learned that the actual size of the Sun is huge compared to Earth. However, the Moon is even smaller than the Earth by almost half!!!!! We used special solar rulers and 2-D modals to help determine the approximate sizes of the planets and Sun. We also looked at this graphic below showing the size of the Moon flattened on top of a picture of the Earth flattened.

We also saw a really cool site where you can compare sizes of planets. You can go to the site by clicking the link here or going to the links on the side. I also challenged students with a question about whether there was colour in space. I said that there wasn’t. However, on further research I may be only half right. Does anyone know for sure. If you can get me the answer, I have a prize for the first one correct that can show me evidence!!!

Our Memory Verse for this week is Psalm 100:1-2:

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Finally, thanks to all the parents who were really patient last Wednesday with the Worlds Math Day. The students did an amazing job and answered a ton of basic facts questions. Many students continued on after the event was over and racked up even more points. It was a lot of fun, and hopefully, we will get a larger group of people together to get even more points and maybe even some medals!!!! I created an Animoto to show you some of the stuff that went on during the day!!!!

Science Tomorrow!

Science Tomorrow!

Looking forward to science tomorrow. We will be continuing our talk about the atmosphere and what it is made of as well as how scientists look for evidence to learn and explain things.

Here is a video to help prepare you for learning more about Space!!! The video is not actual real video but a computer simulation. However, it is still really cool!

As this is a short week, we will not be doing a spelling list or a memory verse. As well, I thought the memory verse would be a little much with the Speech Meet trials tomorrow. Those students who are hoping to participate, will be doing there verses in front of the class tomorrow. From those students I will be picking two students to recite their poems and two students to recite the memory verses.

I also have a box set of Geronimo Stilton books which came with the book orders today but which I don’t remember ordering. If your child came home with new books and one of them was not the box set which you are sure you ordered, please let me know. Otherwise I will add it to the collection.

A Strange Sight On Mars

A Strange Sight On Mars

So, I was looking through the new Google Earth the other day, especially at the new Mars section they have there when I noticed something really interesting. I think that Google Earth is the coolest program ever (though WWTelescope is right up there as well) and I was so happy when they added the Google Mars and Moon sections to it. So I was spending quite a bit of time looking around at all the pictures that they already have of Mars, when I found this strange site. You can see it below. Click on the picture to make it bigger. Do you see anything strange?

Now I always thought that my family was a little alien but I didn’t realize that they had actually moved to another planet!!

Anyways . . ..

Today, was a good day. Mondays are always exciting because it is the start of a new week and the students are always refreshed and ready to delve into new ideas and topics. For science today, we used Stellarium and WWtelescope to look at the constellations in our sky today as well as learn some new things about Space. One thing that we learned was that a supernova is a star that has gotten too old and died, exploding into many different pieces.

One supernova exploded in 1987 and we didn’t see it until the year 2004! That was amazing. Here is a picture of a supernova:

Here is a video showing an animation of a supernova happening. This is a really cool video though it is just an animation. However, it does give some idea as to what happens.

Here are the spelling words for this week:

Spelling N 3

You can get to the Spelling City List using the link below. Just click on the picture.

The memory verse for this week is:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Have a great day!!!

A Space-y Day!!!

A Space-y Day!!!

Wow! What an amazing day! Lots of great things happening here in Grade 3. There was lots of learning, laughing, work and fun to be had. The day went by really fast.

First of all, in science, the students are really getting into their Space Unit. Today, the students were preparing cover pages for their new unit. They drew things on the cover page that reflected what they knew about space already. There are some great pictures! We also spend some time using Stellarium and WWTelescope looking at galaxies, stars, planets and the constellations. Students learned all about the constellation Orion the Hunter using Stellarium. Stellarium is a great free program where students can see the stars and constellations for their own location in real time or in the future. It has to be see to be believed. You can get it free by clicking the links. WWTelescope is another free program that is just magnificent. You can view planets, galaxies and zoom in on them. You can watch a guided tour or create your own tour. If your computer can handle it, please download it as it is an beautiful and amazing guide to God’s amazing creation!

I forgot to place the link to the Spelling City here this week. So here is the link. Just click on the picture to be taken to it.

Just a reminder as well that students have a Mad Minute test tomorrow. If you would like to practice their addition and subtraction facts, you can print off these pages by clicking here (addition and subtraction) or using the image below.

Also, I forgot to mention to the students that we have skating for tomorrow. So students need to bring their skating items. They may also wear their play clothes tomorrow.

Here is one of the videos I showed the students about the stars in our galaxy. Students were amazed by how small our sun is compared to the other stars!!

Monday’s Fine!!

Monday’s Fine!!

It was a great day; a little chaotic as Monday’s go but still a lot of fun. It was great to see so many of the students back after their sicknesses and travel.

It is amazing to think that we are now into February. Soon it will be time to start thinking about report cards again! In Science, I am really excited to be starting our Space Unit. We had a great time last year with it and I think we will have lots more fun this year. A little hint: I was talking to a parent who was having computer problems and I was telling her that this unit has lots of great resources including free programs, videos and other wonderful things for the computer. If you are having problems with your computer or have been thinking about upgrading, this would be a wonderful time to do so.

Here are the spelling words (spelling-n-2) for today.

Spelling N 2

This weeks bible verse comes from Jeremiah:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

Have a great evening and to end off, here’s a great video for all you animal lovers out there!

The 4th Week of 2009

The 4th Week of 2009

Today was a busy day for a Monday. We had quite a few people missing today so it made it a good day for some “Ketchup”; a term I use when we take some time for the students to finish up projects or work we have been dealing with for awhile. We also worked on our next spelling word list. The spelling list can be downloaded here (spelling-n-1).

Spelling N 1

Here is the link to the Spelling City list. As you can see, I have added the number of the spelling list so you can be sure that you have the right one.

Here is the bible verse for this week. It is one of my favorites and one that I used when I gave my testimony.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back!

Today was a special day as Stephen came back to us. It was so good to have him back after being away with appendicitis!

There was a lot going on today. One big thing was that we ended off our building today. You can see the final budget totals by clicking the link “The Kids Who Rock At Building” link at the very top of the page. We are going to be finishing off their booklets to be handed in and marked. Our next unit of study will be Space. I love this unit as do the students and I am looking forward to doing lots of really cool projects and learning all about space with the students.

Students will be having a quiz on their adding, subtracting and multiplying facts starting on Friday. We will be doing a practice tomorrow. If you would like some practice pages, you can create your own using the Math Facts Cafe link on the left side. For math, students have just finished learning the 6 times tables and equivalent fractions.

Please continue to help your child with their reading every night. They should be reading at least 10 mins a night.

Our memory verse this week is:

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Ephesians 4:30-31

We will be doing their memory verses on Friday this week. A number of students had difficulty remembering that they needed to be practicing last week.

Here are the spelling words for this week. You can download them here spelling-m-7or from the box.net widget on the right side of the page:

Spelling M 7

To end off here is another video from the Simon’s Cat series we enjoy! Have a great night!

Stephen! Are you reading this?

Stephen! Are you reading this?

Just checking!!

I’ve been hearing lots of great things about the spelling city. The students seem to really be enjoying the activities and the ability to practice their spelling words. Here are the spelling words (m-6) for the week for you to print out if you like. They are also on the box.net widget on the side.

M-6

I am thinking of a way to reward the students for using the spelling city site to encourage them to use it. I will let you know about what I come up with soon. Speaking of tests, we forgot about the 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 10 times table test today. We will instead be doing it for Friday. That gives the students a couple more days in which to practice.

Mrs. Caswell has passed out the recorders for the students as you may have noticed today (and I am sure you have noticed!). There is also a note that was to go home with it as well. The students will be bringing the notes home tomorrow. You can also get the notice in the box.net widget on the side.

The memory verse for the week is from Ephesians 4:29:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Thank you working so hard on voting for the site. We came a long way and from far behind. We didn’t make it but had a good run nonetheless. Thank you for your support. I have not been able to write as much as I wish I could. I am still adjusting to having a baby at home. However, I am going to really make sure I get some more posts out during the week to help you stay better informed. Thanks!
