Learning Student Names in Inuit

Learning Student Names in Inuit

Busy day & excited students sum up our day!

Classroom activity today:
-Math drill practice
-Daily devotions
-Math (Graphing & Pictographs)
-Where in the world is Mrs. Waffenschmidt? (She was visiting Gibralter Rock)
-Poetry (Acrostic poems using letters from the topic to begin each line.  See student samples below)
-Social Studies (Inuit Languages) & Strength Arctic Winter Games
-Ski trip reminders
Next Thursday:
We will finish up an assessment in math and move on to a new unit.  In social studies we explore traditional shelters and build sample igloos of our own.

Inuktitut: Student Names

Today we expanded our understanding the traditional language Inuktitut.  Students listened to the alphabet and then used the syllabic system to write their own names.  This
was a challenge as many of the sounds from our alphabet are not found in the Inuktitut language.

Sample Student Works in Poetry:

Igloo

I love to make them in the snow
Great place to go.
Lot’s of them in the north.
Oil light,
Old traditions.
