Poetry Comics

One of the projects we have been working on is a comic strip based on the events of the poem “The Secret”. Students had to use the actions in the poem to create a comic strip showing how secrets can spread and hurt others. This helped us to understand the main idea of a poem. I told the students that I would pick the winner and create a comic using a comic strip creator called MakeBeliefsComix . The winner turned out to be a tie between B.D. and J.K. So I combined the two ideas and created these comics.

Oh, What A Wonderful Day!!!

Oh, What A Wonderful Day!!!

MoonThe sun finally came out today!!! What a gorgeous day! It was a much smaller class today with four children missing. That is very rare for our class. We had many things to do still and got them all done on time. Students have a home letter for you to sign and bring back on Monday. You should also be receiving a newsletter if you haven’t already seen it from the website.

We also had something very cool today. I got a website this morning where you could sign up to have your name inscribed on a plaque and put into the next NASA spacecraft going to the Moon. The site describes it as this:

Sign up to send your name to the moon. Names will be collected and placed onboard the LRO spacecraft for its historic mission bringing NASA back to the moon. You will also receive a certificate showcasing your support of the mission.

The deadline is June 27, 2008 for the submission of names.

LRO’s objectives are to find safe landing sites, locate potential resources, characterize the radiation environment, and demonstrate new technology.

It was very cool and I got all the children signed up. They also got their certificate to bring home. We were talking about it all day!!! Just think! Our names on the Moon!

By the way, did you know you can use Google Moon to see the Moon in detail????

On a completely different topic, I had mentioned in an earlier post that I was going to focus on a couple of topics of interest to parents. I am going to talk about Internet Safety to start as more and more students use the internet at home. Sometimes it is scary how comfortable children can be with the internet and computer and know so much without understanding the consequences.Today, I am going to start with one of the most important things with protecting your child:

  1. Supervise your child while online and consider putting the computer in a common room of the house.

This sounds fairly common sense but you would not believe how many kids (and not just from here!) tell me that they have a computer in their rooms. Whether or not the computer is connected to the Internet, it should still be in an area where the time and content is being monitored. Common areas can be kitchens, family rooms or other places where the child has the expectation that someone could come by at any moment. Having the computer in the bedroom does not allow for this and students can be very good at hiding their tracks and using the computer when they think their parents are asleep or busy. Children are naturally curious and the Internet has many elements that can be tempting to curious minds and extremely easy to get to. With the computer in a common area, this helps children deal with these temptations in a non-combative manner. The computer is just placed in a common area. You don’t have to worry about what they are up to when the bedroom door is closed or whether they are on late at night.

Can I Please Buy A Vowel?

Can I Please Buy A Vowel?

I am seeing a whole lot of comments tonight which is great. Before I put down the computer for tonight and spend some time with my wonderful wife, I thought I would put a quick blog entry to highlight the new newsletter coming out tomorrow and mention a couple of things going on today. I have added some new links on the side including the cool link to the video of Mercury crossing the Sun. I just think that is so neat; this little planet going across the huge magnificence of the Sun. It certainly gives you another reminder of the awesomeness of God. There is also a link to a new logic game called Blobs. It is very addictive. The students really got into it.

So here is the newsletter for May. You can download it from the Box.net widget on the right. Don’t forget to vote in our new poll!

Friends, Romans, Countrymen Lend Me Your Ears . .

What a busy day of learning today!!!! Today we started a new poem called “Apologies”. Students brainstormed a variety of inanimate objects, then though out apologies for how they have used them. Whether it was sharpening a pencil or kicking soccer balls, students had a great time thinking up apologies for their actions! We did a sample poem together, which you can see below:

Read this doc on Scribd: i’m sorry

Students also finished studying the eight times tables, which are the last times tables the students had to learn. Actually, the only 8 times fact we had to learn was 8×8 as we had already learned all the other times tables and could apply those to learning the 8 times tables. For example, students already knew 2×8 so they also knew 8×2. After this, students will be working on multiplying multiple digits (ex. 28×2).

In social, we started a new project called “A Tribute To . . .” We have been learning about about everyday services and emergency services in class. Using that information we picked an emergency service to write a tribute about. We will take those tributes, add music and pictures to it and create a voicethread to add to our blog.

Finally, in science we have been making some fantastic discoveries. First students discovered that the Sun is huge compared to the Earth and Moon and that the moon is actually tiny compared to the Sun and Earth. We then then solved a mystery. WE have been wondering how it is possible for the moon to cover the sun during a solar eclipse if the Sun is so big. Using a couple of examples, (including one of the boys standing on a counter!) students discovered that the farther away something is from us, the smaller it looks. So the sun appears to be the same size as the moon because it is so far away!! Next week, I will show the students a neat website that shows what the sun looks like from different planets!!!!

I have included the spelling letter in the box.net widget on the side. As well, I am working hard to get the May newsletter ready. Look for it coming soon!!!!

Beginnings of Spring

Beginnings of Spring

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I had a great Friday at a conference in Vancouver. I spent all day talking and learning about technology in the class and learned some great things. Mostly, it reaffirmed to me what we are doing in the classroom with technology and all the things that can still be done. On a technology note, I have set up the students with their own e-mails for use with Animoto. If you remember, students have been creating their own videos using this really neat site. If you click on the videos category on the left side, you will be able to see some of them. I have explained to students that these e-mails are for animoto use only. All the e-mails are connected to my e-mail so that I am able to track what they are doing. One one else has access to these videos or emails except for me.

It was a busy day today. I can’t believe it is May already. Only a short time left and still so much to do. Today we started some new poems. One was about a snake and the other was about things they like including bugs. Students saw a picture of a big and spent some time describing them. After that, the students used a template to describe something they liked whether it was bugs, pizza or something different. Students also go their spelling lists today though we had a bit of a rough beginning as I started giving them a list they had already done. So we had to re-start but quickly got through the right words. At least they recognized them!

For science today, we had a great time measuring the sizes of the Sun, Earth and Moon. What a discovery! Using a scale model ruler, students measured the diameter of each star and planet. Students discovered that the diameter of the Sun was 1,380,000 km, the moon was 3500 km and the Earth was 15,000 km!! We really got an appreciation of the size of the Sun and it’s only a medium sized star! Tomorrow, we will discover why the Sun appears to be the same size as the moon when it is so obviously not!!!!

Parents . ..Just to lay out some ideas I have, I am working on sharing information on Internet Safety and Friendships over the next few blog entries so keep an eye out for those.

Prince Caspian Cometh!!!

Prince Caspian Cometh!!!

I am very excited to see the new Narnia movie. From the previews it looks like it is going to be very exciting!!!! I loved the first movie and have seen it over and over. Incidentally, the first movie was on tv this weekend. How many of you have seen it? Did you like it? Answer our poll question down below and see what others thought.

I thought I would include a couple of videos about the upcoming Prince Caspian movie.

Hockey

Hockey

Our guest bloggers are writing furiously, coming up with interesting things to tell you about. Today we have some information about hockey!!

hockeyHockey is Canada’s most famous sport. Many kids play in minor hockey. If you play all your life when you are older you might be able to play in the N.H.L. My favorite team is the Calgary Flames and my favorite player is Jarome Iginla. The person who invented hockey is named Hans. The story is many hundreds of years ago the boy named Hans was skating on an ice covered river when he almost tripped over a branch. After that he picked it up it had another branch sticking out close to the bottom he broke the piece underneath the branch sticking out and then he leaned on it and started skating again and that helped him keep his balance. After a while he found a stone and hit it with the branch. It went flying and went under a bridge. Then a whole bunch of kids joined and they made teams. The next day they played but with a flat rock and that slided better. So they made disc shaped rubber clobs and called it a puck and thats how hockey was invented. Hockey is my favorite sport. I play on a team with my brother. The team is called Thunder! Hockey is really cool!

Devotion

. . . hope in the Lord from this time on and forevermore. (Psalm 131:3)

Yep, it’s Thursday! Thursdays always feel like they come and go so fast. The time we did have together, we worked on our math. In math we are looking at the seven times tables and multiply a single number by 10 and 100. Students learned that the easiest way to multiply by 10 and 100’s is to take the zeros off, multiply the remaining numbers and add the remaining zeros back on. The students caught on very quickly though we will take another look at this again next week.

wildpaintingcontrast2-800.jpgStudents also had floor hockey and art in the afternoon. For the past few weeks students have had Ms. Evans in the classroom doing art with the students while I have taken the enrichment group to do a mystery unit. Ms. Evans did a fabulous job with the kids. (Yeah, Ms. Evans!) It is such a blessing to work with such a great group of teachers. Everyone is so willing to share and help out that it just makes a great place to work. This week they were working on contrast in art. Students took white strips of paper cutting different types of lines into it. They then had to arrange the white strips onto the black construction paper in a pleasing and complex series of lines.

Egyptions

Egyptions

Once again, 3B brings you another post by a students guest blogger. A.L.R is going to write about a little about Egyptians!

TutTutankhamen the young Egypt king is now dead. The poor boy king is dead. He truly was only eighteen years old when he died. I bet his wife was very sad to lose him because he probably was a good person to know. King Tut’s son then became king of Egypt. A golden necklace was buried with the king when he died because they believed gold would keep the robbers away. Jewels were put into fold and charms too. Egyptian kings were buried in a royal graveyard when they died. Kings were buried with furniture to keep them company when they died. Egypt had two separate kingdoms: one from upper Egypt and one from lower Egypt. Egyptian people also did mummify men, women and children when they died. There is only one royal tomb which has never been found. That tomb is the tomb of king Tut’s father. Those are all the facts I would like to tell you right now!
