Social Studies Explorers Project

Social Studies Explorers Project

Yesterday the students began planning to build a ship that resembles one that would have been used by explorers coming over to Canada. Each student has begun the process of planning what ship they are going to build and the materials that they are going to need to build it.

Can you please spend a few minutes asking your child about their plans and what materials they are planning to use? I have told them that they can bring items from home to help with this process. For example, some students had the idea of building their ship out of Lego which I have given my permission for them to do. They would, of course, need to bring Lego from home so if you are not comfortable with this please encourage your child to plan to use other materials. Some other ideas for materials might be chopsticks, fabric (for the sails), cardboard, wood, popsicle sticks, clay or plasticine, etc.

This project is to be worked on and completed at school. They will be given class time in order to build their ship. We will begin building their ships next Wednesday (Jan 27th) so please encourage your child to bring materials to the school by then. Thank you.
