Notes for the Week of Nov. 19

Notes for the Week of Nov. 19

We had lots on our plates today. Here are some of things we are up to with the amazing Grade 4’s!

We have been working hard on our Mentor Sentences this week. Mentor Sentences is a program that connects real literature with grammar and sentence structure. The idea is to have students learn about grammar rules and sentence structure through great children’s literature. Using sentences by children’s authors as models for great sentences, students learn grammar terms, why commas are used, why names are capitalized, subjects/predicates and much more! The hope is that students will see how great sentences are created, practice writing great sentences using the sentences written by actual author’s and create their own sentences in their writing using the same style and structure! It certainly hasn’t been easy as a lot of terminology is new to students but we are certainly learning quickly and are loving the great children’s literature connected with the program.

Science today saw us ending our Oobleck unit. The unit was focused on connecting what we do in Science with what actual scientists do. We connected our experiences with playing with Oobleck, discussing our findings, and using our findings to create our own Oobleck machines to what the scientists had to do to create the first Mars rover. We saw some great videos including the one I have included below. Tomorrow, we will be starting our Space unit focusing on the connections between our Earth, Sun and Moon.

Some notes for this week:

  • Spelling: There is no spelling this week as it is a short week.
  • Memory Verse: Our memory verse for the week is Romans 8:24. As it is a short week, I will hear the memory verse on Monday.
  • Pumpkin Math: Next Monday, Mrs. Goosen’s class and our class will be doing our annual Pumpkin Math. Students will be doing all sorts of math with pumpkins. Students do not need to bring anything other than an old shirt to get mucky in!
  • Hot Dog Day:
On Oct. 28, one of our fabulous local business’, Fraser Valley Roofing, has graciously agreed to sponsor a Hot Dog Day for our students. At lunch time, the food truck will be here to hand out hot dogs to our entire school! Each child will receive one hot dog and 1 bag of chips free of charge. Students do not need to sign up or send anything to receive the hot dog or chips. If students do not wish to have get a hot dog, they should bring their regular lunch and let their teacher know that they will not be having a hot dog on the day of the event. This should be a fun day as it is also Fall Colour Dress-up Day for our students!

Thanks to Fraser Valley Roofing for putting on this event for our school!
  • Fall Colour Day: Oct. 28 is also our Fall Colour Day. Students can choose to wear casual in any colour of fall they wish. Students may also choose to just wear their uniforms if they like.

The music of the week this week comes from one of my favourite local groups – The Bills. This group consists of members from British Columbia. They have been around for awhile and have one some national awards for their music. However, you are not likely to have heard of them as they keep a pretty low profile. The group itself comes together only once and awhile. When they are not playing or touring together, they are often working on their own projects. So, you would be forgiven if you have never heard of them. I only heard of them when I came across one of their albums in the folk section of the library. I was intrigued by the cover and when I heard them play, I was blown away! Doing some more research on them, I discovered that they were going to be playing at the local hall in Harrison Hot Springs. It was a very intimate concert in the hall with people sitting at tables. But it was a fantastic concert and afterwards, the band hopped off the stage, paraded around the room while playing their last song and signed autographs. My wife and I still talk about that concert. Here are a couple of selections:
