Raul Oaida built a full-sized car out of half-a-million Lego pieces that actually drives. The 256-cylinder engine is powered by compressed air. Top speed is 20 mph.
I guess you would still need to get a license.
This is a stunning and insanely clever achievement. My favorite part, aside from that 256-cylinder engine, is the windshield built out of two dozen tiny Lego windshields.

Just a few notes as we move into the week:
Just a note about a typo in the letter that got sent home. Track practices are Mondays and Thursdays starting tomorrow. While we understand if your child can not make it to all of the practices, we would encourage them to come to as many as possible recognizing that it is a commitment. We would like to try and make sure that students are not deciding at the last minute that they are not interested as that makes planning very difficult for us.
It was a busy week last week and it looks like it will continue to be busy this week. We had a lot of fun with fencing last week and I have included some photos of the fun. The students were really excited and learned some great technique as they pretended to be swashbuckling pirates. We also started our pirate unit with a huge pirate scavenger/treasure hunt. Students are trying to solve clues to find the treasure for their groups. The pirate unit will coincide with our writing unit in Language Arts. We also started our space tomatoes, a project where students plant 2 groups of tomato seeds. The difference is that one group of seeds has actually been in space as part of Chris Hadfield’s expedition. Our experiment is to see whether zero gravity environments affect seeds. The catch is that we don’t know which group of seeds is which!

Our music of the week was Suessical the Musical. I got to see it last week when we went to a Middle School production the daughter of a friend of ours was in. They did a great job and it reminded me how much I enjoyed the musical. Here is a clip from the broadway cast:

We have a busy day tomorrow with both the start of our Pirate unit and Fencing, along with Service Day in the afternoon.
For Service Day, students are allowed to wear play clothes. We will be heading out at approx. 1:00pm with the Grade 1 class. We will walking along Broadway collecting garbage. We will be going rain or shine, so, if it is raining, please ensure that children are dressed appropriately. If you indicated that you were interested in helping us by walking with us, you can just meet us at the class at 1:00 or, bring your lunch and join your child for lunch!
We have some field trips coming up soon! The class has been learning about the fur trade and will be visiting historic Fort Langley on Tuesday, May 12. Please return your permission slips as soon as possible. Also, we love to have parents join us so let me know if you’d like to come along. Please note that we are travelling with Mrs. Couse’s class and there will be limited space on the bus so you may have to car pool with other parents.
Looking ahead, we will also be heading to the Maritime Museum on Tuesday, May 19. This field trip will be a great addition to our study of the early explorers. Permission slips will be sent home closer to the date.
Tomorrow is the start of a very busy couple of months as we begin looking towards the end of the year. Of course, there is always spelling and a memory verse. Let’s get started shall we?

Our music of the week was another Canadian artist. Loreena McKennit is always one of my favorites and has always been one of my favorites since her album, The Visit. She had an amazing mix of celtic music that explored the roots of music form the early days of medieval music which has always been an interest of mine. She hasn’t put out a whole lot recently but it is always nice to delve into her past songs.
This will be our next Science Challenge . . . and it’s all about music!! No, no, don’t worry your smart, curious, intelligent heads now. You don’t need to be able to read notes or anything. You can put away the old tuba collecting dust in the corner. This one is going to be a whiz-banger of creativity, a flim-sham of activity, a kerplutz of musical genius making. So without further ado (and with sounds of music running through my head!) here is the challenge:
Use any/all of the following materials to create a one man band contraption that you can wear and play. This is a great one to videotape!
