First Day Under Our Belt!

First Day Under Our Belt!

Well, our first day is under our belt! It was a great start. The students (and the teacher!) were all very excited! It was great to see all the students and hear their excited chatter as they re-established old friendships and got settled into their new class.

We had a busy day today with lots of activities to start getting to know each other. One of the things we did today was to create a mission statement of how our class is going to run this year. Rather than a set of rules that feel prescriptive and restrictive, this mission statement instead will describe what we want to see happen this year, how we will accomplish this and why we want this to happen. We are still finalizing the statement to make it clearer and easier to read. When we are done, I will post it on the blog for everyone to see. I will also be doing a good copy of the statement and having the students all sign it.

I also gave each student a newsletter to take home today which you should have received. At the back of the newsletter is some homework for the parents. The students were all very happy that their parents were getting homework and not them! 🙂 If you could please fill in the questionnaire and send it back with your child, that would be very helpful for me in getting to know your child better. I have also put a copy of the newsletter below.

Other Items:

Phys. Ed and Music: Phys.Ed will be on Tuesday’s and Friday’s this year. Students should have a PE Kit to change into for those days.

Calendar: I have set up a calendar on the blog for important dates and reminders. I try to keep this updated as much as possible and enter in dates as I get them. You should see a link at the top of the page to view the calendar.

Spelling: During the month of September we concentrate on reviewing the phonograms and working on handwriting. Therefore we will not be starting spelling until the end of September. I will be putting out more information about Spelling as we get closer.

I think that is about it for now. Please remember that this  blog is a very important tool in communicating what is happening. There are also lots of resources for both you and your children as well as lots of fun things that I find occasionally. So please check out the blog as much as possible or sign up to be notified when a new article is posted!

2013 First Day Newsletter by ihancock

Welcome Back!!!!

Welcome Back!!!!

welcome_matDear Parents,

Welcome to another year at Highroad Academy! If you have made it this far, than you are doing extremely well in your first foray onto our class blog!!! I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to welcome your child to my class. A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort among parents, child and teacher. I look forward to the work and growth we will all accomplish this year.

My expectations for conduct and academic standards are high. With your participation both in and out of the classroom, we can look forward to a productive, creative and enjoyable year together.

We have many exciting things happening in Grade 2/3! In Language Arts , we will be using two programs called “The Daily 5” and “Six Trait Writing” to expand student’s reading and writing skills. I am very excited about these programs and I think the students will enjoy it as well. In Math, students are going to continue working with the Math-U-See program with a focus on multiplication at the Grade 3 level and addition and subtraction of multiple digit numbers at the Grade 2 level. We will also look at story problems as we develop skills, strategies and techniques to solve them, as well as continuing their work in numeration, operations and properties, measurement, geometry, and data management all with a multiplication focus. In Science, the students will be exploring ideas and concepts in Building, Plant and Animal Growth and Change, Space Science, and different types of matter. In Social Studies, we will be looking at communities in the past and present within British Columbia and Canada.

Again, welcome! Please feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns you may have. My classroom door is always open, and messages can be left for me with our school secretary, to which I will respond as soon as possible. Please take a moment to fill in the question sheet and send it back with your child. This will allow me to get to know your child better.

If you are returning from previous years, welcome back!!! It’s good to see you again! Please feel free to keep coming back to see what’s new!!!

Thank You!
Mr. Hancock

You are in a place where you can learn new things, see amazing sites and play fun games that make you think and make your brain work in different ways.

If you look around, there are many ways you can go! If you click on the links area on the top left, you can see how much you weigh in space, play with a ball to knock over flags or write a poem.

Underneath that you can see what books we are reading and sign up to receive updates whenever I add new things to blog!

On the other side, you can see a cool map and a list showing where people are visiting from, a place where parents can download files from class and some photos I have taken.

There are also important dates and, after all that, you can read all the information on class events and happenings in the center area. This area will also have spelling lists, memory verse and other important notes.

Parents, please be aware that there will be no newsletters coming home monthly other than the one your child brought home today. However, permission forms and any others notes requiring signatures will still come home to be signed. If you would like a paper copy, you can use the “eco-safe” button on the bottom right hand side!
