Just a reminder that this Friday is a Half Day of school with students being dismissed at 12:15.

It is also Pajama Day. Students are encouraged to wear their favorite appropriate pajamas.

On Wednesday, students will be having their Science test in the morning. They should have brought home a study guide. If you have not seen it, you can find one on the previous blog post or pick another one up from me.

On Wednesday afternoon, students have earned enough stars to have a class party. We will be having the class party on Wednesday afternoon. If you would like to send something for a snack for the class, that would be appreciated. However there is no obligation to provide snacks as I will provide the majority of the snacks for the students.

Spelling For This Week and Other News!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! It was very nice and relaxing for us. The calm before the storm! With our baby being expected around the 23rd of March, I know that there will not be many relaxing days left! As a friend just told me the other day, when it comes to children, 1+1 does not equal two! Anyway, we are very excited for the new arrival.

Here is the link to the Spelling City page. Don’t forget! If you complete the spelling test on the Spelling City website and you bring it in to me, I will give you an extra mark on your spelling test on Friday!

Next week, students will be going on a Field trip to the Planetarium. The field trip is being planned for Feb. 9th and permission forms went home today. Permission forms need to be brought back by Friday!!! If you need another copy of the permission form, you can download one from the box.net widget on the right hand side of the website.

Another reminder about the Speech Meet! We will be holding the try-outs next Weds so please help your child have their pieces ready and memorized. Students have already been telling me that they have been practicing which is fantastic.

A Strange Sight On Mars

So, I was looking through the new Google Earth the other day, especially at the new Mars section they have there when I noticed something really interesting. I think that Google Earth is the coolest program ever (though WWTelescope is right up there as well) and I was so happy when they added the Google Mars and Moon sections to it. So I was spending quite a bit of time looking around at all the pictures that they already have of Mars, when I found this strange site. You can see it below. Click on the picture to make it bigger. Do you see anything strange?

Now I always thought that my family was a little alien but I didn’t realize that they had actually moved to another planet!!

Anyways . . ..

Today, was a good day. Mondays are always exciting because it is the start of a new week and the students are always refreshed and ready to delve into new ideas and topics. For science today, we used Stellarium and WWtelescope to look at the constellations in our sky today as well as learn some new things about Space. One thing that we learned was that a supernova is a star that has gotten too old and died, exploding into many different pieces.

One supernova exploded in 1987 and we didn’t see it until the year 2004! That was amazing. Here is a picture of a supernova:

Here is a video showing an animation of a supernova happening. This is a really cool video though it is just an animation. However, it does give some idea as to what happens.
