We are a class from British Columbia, Canada. We are a class of 19 very curious and excited students that enjoy a wide range of activities (although gym always seems to come out on top!). We are interested in technology and how we can use it in the classroom to connect with our families and other people around the world.
Macrame Mania!!!

Macrame Mania!!!

583Hi!  It’s Mrs. Goosen here…Just like the piratess and explorers needed to know how to tie different knots and use macrame while onboard their ships…we too are learning some of the same skills…to make AMAZING bracelets!!  I think I have created some macrame maniacs!!!  Today the students learned two basic knots that they are using to make bracelets.  This is an activity that they can do once their other work in class has been completed – and, of course, they may also choose to do this at home!  I came across a great macrame website that I told the students I would post on the blog.  It has a lot of really neat beginner patterns that the students can try at home…and, once they complete them I would LOVE for them to show me!!

Okay, here’s the site!  Enjoy!!

Happy Birthday, Captain Ham Hands Conroy!!

Happy Birthday, Captain Ham Hands Conroy!!

The grade four’s had such a great time this afternoon celebrating the Captain’s birthday!  They were so excited about the pirate themed birthday and we had lots of fun getting ready and suprising Mr. Hancock!  Dayna even asked the Jamaica Mission’s trip students to make us some balloon swords!  What fun!  And, the best part of it all was that we actually surprised Mr. H!  Sweet!!!  And, of course, no birthday would be complete without a cake!  I have attached some pictures of this afternoon for you to look at.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday, Mr. Hancock!!

Thank You and More Fieldtrip Fun!

Thank You and More Fieldtrip Fun!

I just wanted to give a great big thank you to the students and Mrs. Goosen for the wonderful birthday surprise. We will put some pictures up soon but I just wanted to say that the cake was probably the most magnificant cake I have ever seen. It was a truly delicious treasure chest full of delectable treats. It was simply amazing. Mrs. Goosen is amazing and we are all very blessed to have her in our class. Her generosity and giving nature are always evident. It was a great surprise and I wanted to just thank Mrs. Goosen and the students for their kindness. It was a lot of fun. I know Siena will love the balloon sword!

Here are some more pictures and video from the wonderful fieldtrip that we had.

And here’s a fun one for you. Our class all got on the boat and learned the words to this song and made a video. Our friend Andrew is playing the Pirate King in the video here with all the rest of the students acting as the pirates!

Aarrgh! A Pirate’s Life for Me!

Aarrgh! A Pirate’s Life for Me!

IMG_1379Well, it has been awhile since I actually have written a post. It has been busy here in Grade 4 and I wanted to take some time to tell you about some exciting things that are happening here in Grade 4.

The most exciting thing is that we have recently started a new unit in Language Arts and Social Studies on Pirates and Explorers. The two units fit really nice together and I thought that it would be a lot of fun to explore the topic of pirates as the students were studying explorers in Social Studies. Our big question that we are asking ourselves is whether or not Pirates are similar to Explorers and how Pirates and Explorers affect us still today.

If you come by our classroom, you will see that we have changed somewhat. Our class has become a ship with rules and guidelines for being a shipmate on our pirate vessel. If you do stop by, please make sure to check the poster outside the door and ask yourself if you have scurvy or check out the poster by the starboard porthole to see whether we can properly fit you for a peg leg!

Throughout the unit, students will be learning about pirate life and using their learning to write their own paragraphs about various aspects of pirate life. We are also building ships to hang from our ceiling as well as planning a pirate day where students will have to search for treasure. Lot’s of fun!

To start our unit, we went out to the Maritime Museum in Vancouver. We did this before Spring Break but I wanted to share with you some of the pictures that we took of the day and all the great learning that happened!

Going On A Field Trip! It’s Going To Be A Fun Time! . . .

Going On A Field Trip! It’s Going To Be A Fun Time! . . .

RobotJUh-Oh a Boat! A creaky, leaky boat!
Can’t go over it!
Can’t go under!
Got to go through it!
Creaky! Creaky! Creaky!

Going on a field trip . . . .

I think I have been reading too many kids books with my daughter! Anyway, it’s fieldtrip day tomorrow and I wanted to just give some info before we go.

Students are still expected to wear uniforms though it does not have to be full dress. As we are there all day, students will need to pack a lunch for the trip. We will be leaving at 8:30 sharp! So please try to have you child here by 8:25. We need to be there for 9:45! We are expecting to be back sometime around 3:30.

If you have a digital camera, please bring it along. It would be great to get some pictures, not only for the blog but for our slideshow at the end of the year!

If you asked to be a volunteer, I should have put a note in your child’s planner! If that did not happen, just come see me before and after school and we can chat! As it is only our class going, there is room on the bus for everyone!

Looking forward to a great day!
