Home Reading 2016
Today our class started working towards our goal of reaching 300 books read in a year.
That’s right! We have started our home reading program for the year!! We’re very excited. If you had gone through the blog thoroughly and looking at the homework page, you will have noticed that I have been teasing the Home Reading program for awhile but not actually started it until now for a number of different reasons.
For more detailed information on how the Home Reading program works, you can check out the page labeled “Home Reading” which you can find along the top of the page. On that page, you can find detailed instructions, resources and tips.
For a quick synopsis of what I am expecting, check the checklist below.
Home Reading Checklist
- Students choose a book to read. While the goal is to have students read nightly, I understand that families may be busy and may not be able to get the home reading done each night. However, students should strive to read as many nights in the week as possible. Students should be reading at least 20 mins a night.
- Record Time on Calendar: When students are done reading, they turn to the calendar page in their planners and write the amount of time they read that evening. For example, if they had read for 25 mins on Nov. 1, students would write “25min” on the calendar page on the space for Nov. 1. They then bring their planner to you to sign.
- Finishing a book: When students finish a book, and only when they have finished a book, students turn to the page where their homework is written in their planner and write the name of the book on that date. They then get a parent to sign beside where the title was written.
That’s it!
